Commonwealth Scholarship Studies have already identified potential impacts of OA on various aspects of fish health with concerns for these effects on fisheries. Fish have also recently gained new importance in our understanding of global marine biogeochemical cycles, through their gut excretion of calcium carbonatesand the role this plays in ocean chemistry. This contribution of fish is also predicted to increase in response to future OA and temperature scenarios.
This PhD Commonwealth Scholarship studentship will address a major knowledge gap on the potential for interactive effects of OA with important coastal marine contaminants in the early life stages of commercially relevant flatfish species. The experimental exposure studies will be conducted using bespoke facilities already present at the Cefas Weymouth laboratory. Effects will be studied using a combination of molecular, physiological and bio-imaging tools to examine key endpoints to reveal any potential for interactive effects of OA and toxicant stressors. The Commonwealth Scholarship student will thus receive training in a wide variety of experimental methods and will benefit from working within large, vibrant and interdisciplinary research teams on a highly topical project with direct applications for advising fisheries management.

Project title: The marine gateway as a key factor in the sedimentary evolution of the Mediterranean basin: An ocean-model study linking tectonics and paleocirculation

Marine gateways form a central element in the geological evolution of the sedimentary basins of the Mediterranean region. Gateways control the exchange of water, salt, heat and nutrients with the open ocean and between sub-basins. This control is reflected in the sediments that accumulate. Our objective is to determine how exactly the evolving gateways controlled water properties and circulation of the Mediterranean basins by exploiting the constraints on gateway behaviour offered by the laws of physics. To this end we propose to construct a series of regional-scale implementations of an ocean general circulation model and to compare model results with the available data.

The primary thesis supervisor will be Dr. Paul Th. Meijer.

The project is financed through the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with an MSc or equivalent degree in the Earth Sciences, with a demonstrable interest in sedimentary geological problems, and with sufficient expertise in physics, modelling, and programming. Candidates are expected to communicate easily in English, both verbally and in writing. Candidates should be able to work in a team, but independently.

Terms of employment

The successful candidate will be offered a full-time PhD. position, at first for one year. Contingent on a (yearly) satisfactory performance this may be extended to a total period of four years, with the specific intent that it results in a doctorate within this period. The first evaluation will take place approximately after 6 months of employment, the second after 9 months. After the 9 months evaluation the decision will be made whether an extension of the contract to a total period of 4 years will be offered to the employee. Employment conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities. The gross monthly salary starts at € 2,042.- and increases to € 2,612.- gross per month in the fourth year and is supplemented by a holiday allowance of 8% per year and an end of year bonus of 8.3% (salary rates per 1-1-2011). We also offer a pension scheme, a health insurance allowance and flexible employment conditions.

"There are a lot of work here," said Jeffrey Allison, director of the Department of Energy's Savannah River Operations Office. "We needed chemicals. We will need engineers. We need big story. We will need the whole range."

U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, Columbia, a Democrat who serves as leader of the majority of the House of Representatives, has pushed the financing of HBCUs.

"I think this is a foundation, a step forward," Clyburn said on Thursday at Allen University. "We need to show that we are able to reach the next level."
